I’ve been offered a role at Maria Mallaband, what happens next?

We need a few key documents to start your onboarding process and your Care Home will send these through to the Onboarding Team. Before the onboarding can commence, we need to confirm you have the right to work in the UK, we confirm this by asking you to provide evidence of your identification (please see document list for details.) As soon as we have these documents your onboarding will commence within 72 hours, and you will at that stage then receive an email from your on boarder advising of next steps.

When will I be able to start work at Maria Mallaband?

We aim to get you started as soon as possible but there are a few key things that we need to have in place before you can be booked to start your induction. The first one being a valid DBS certificate (Disclosure and Barring Service), the second being 2 professional references and the last thing we need is your full employment history. On average we hope to get your started within 4-6 weeks and your on boarder will keep you updated along the way.

My manager no longer works for the company, how do I request a reference?

We can request a reference from your previous manager but if they no longer work for the company this would be deemed as a character reference and not a professional reference. This means that we will still need to request a professional reference from the company itself. This could be from the HR team, the Head Office or the new manager – most companies keep candidates employment dates on file even when there has been a change in management.

What is Maria Mallaband’s referencing policy?

MMCG require 2 references, one of which needs to be from your most recent employer. Please remember, as we are asking for a professional reference, we must have a professional email address and not a personal one.

What if my references don’t have a professional email address?

It’s fine, not all employers have a professional email address, but we need to understand why. This will be validated with your employer and documented on your file.

Why do you need my full employment history and what happens if I can’t remember all of it?

MMCG are regulated by the CQC (Care Quality Commission) and they require a full employment history (back to the age of 16) to be on file.as part of your onboarding process you will be asked to provide as much of your employment history as possible. We appreciate it can sometimes be difficult to remember all dates of employment and would encourage you to do what you can to find this information but, let your on boarder know if you are struggling and we’ll advise on next steps.

I have been unemployed for several years and don’t have any professional references, what do I do?

It’s not uncommon for candidates to have gaps within their employment or have not worked at all. In this situation we will ask for character references in place of professional references.

What happens if my DBS is adverse?

If your DBS is returned as ‘See Paper Disclosure’, this means that there are a few additional steps we need to take ahead of you starting work. Once you receive your DBS certificate in the post you will need to share a copy of this with your on boarder. We’ll then discuss the outcome of your DBS and agree any actions surrounding this. We encourage honesty, if you know something will show on your DBS, let us know beforehand.

I already have a DBS and pay for the Update Service; do I need a new DBS check?

That’s great news! We need to see a copy of your DBS certificate to confirm this, and we will then complete an online check to ensure that your DBS remains current. As you’ll be working in a Care Home, we need to ensure you’ve had the required level of checks but your on boarder will keep you updated.

How long can it take for my DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check to complete?

You will receive an email from our DBS provider, uCheck. Within the email there is a link for you to complete your DBS application. We encourage you to complete this application as soon as possible. Once you have completed your application, we’ll ensure we have the correct documents required to verify this (please see DBS checklist). From that point, it can take up to 60 days to complete but is usually completed a lot quicker than this. If your DBS application is still in progress after 60 days, it will be escalated to the DBS.

I’ve received my DBS certificate; do you need a copy of this?

No, we receive notification that your DBS is complete and take evidence of this from our online checking service. It is only if you are part of the DBS Update Service that we require to see your original certificate.

Why do you need to see evidence of my qualifications and what happens if I can’t locate my certificates?

MMCG are regulated by the CQC (Care Quality Commission) and require satisfactory documentary evidence of any qualifications relevant to the duties for which you are employed or appointed to perform. We will encourage you to do what you can to find these certificates or evidence of qualification but, let your on boarder know if you are struggling and we’ll advise on next steps.

What do I wear on my first day?

When you arrive at your Care Home, they’ll have your uniform waiting for you, but we ask you to wear black trousers (no jeans) and a black top (no long sleeves, it needs to be bare below the elbow). Footwear should be flat, black, and enclosed – they must be robust and not soft like canvas shoes. Wristwatches and jewellery are not permitted (unless for religious reasons).
